Abstract
Guy de Maupassant "The Jewelry" Introduction The Jewelry is an interesting short story unveils the curtain on Mr. Latin’s wife's other side of life. Though earning relatively low, the Latin’s enjoy a luxurious life that the husband first attributes to the wife's potential in financial management. However, after Mrs. Latin's death, Mr. Latin confirms the immoral character that the wife enjoyed for more than six years. Possession of character is a strong theme within “The Jewelry". It is worth analysis within this essay as it offers insights on the prostitute in disguise privilege that Mrs. Latin ironically used to keep the family on high status. Mr. Latin initially defines the wife as a decent and innocent young woman whose potential to attract any man remained defined as "very ideal of a pure and good woman to whom every young man can entrust (Maupassant The Jewelry 634)”. Ironically, this definition stands out for a prostitute in disguise. Maupassant confirms that the wife loved theatre sessions which was a night affair that though Mr. Latin did not support and had no control over for the sake of family happiness. To this effect, the wife enjoyed night outs in "fake" jewelry that Mr. Latin did not offer. The character of Maupassant is in question as though they spent six years with the wife; the man failed to suspect the immoral being of the wife. How could the wife spend more than what Maupassant earned on the house and personal upkeep without the husband's notice? It is a form of negligence from a person deserving the title of the head of the house. However, after contracting pneumonia from a winter season theatre night and succumbing a few days later, Maupassant understands the worth of the "fake" jewelry. The worth of Mr. Latin's income was too little compared to the value of the jewelry and the wife's status, which made the husband realize how immoral the wife was though too late to make amends. Conclusion Mrs. Latin, though depicted as an innocent and submissive wife, ironically enjoyed prostitution without causing any alarm to the husband. Though Maupassant viewed jewelry as a burden to the wife, the wife took it as a bridge to close to the other side of the secret life. Ironically, the short story defines Mr. and Mrs. Latin's character as questionable as neither played real to the partner, making the relationship a complete misery in the long run.
