Abstract

Artist: Shakira Topic: Shakira Impact on American Culture One can define an artist as anyone who engages in an activity related to creating art or practices and demonstrates art. A singer, writer, poet, painter, photographer and any other person who express defined skills to conceptualize and make artist works remain considered an artist. Artist work is all about originality; thus, if any person can create and communicate their text through a unique and original piece of art, whether in writing, images or vocal, then they qualify to be defined as an artist whose impact on the society, economy and culture remains well defined. Shakira is an artist who creates music and communicates her message through singing. According to Lena and Danielle (2), a musician is an artist because they either create, conduct, or perform music, a great form of art. Through her songs and performances, Shakira impacts the American culture in a great manner. Shakira is not just an ordinary singer but a great artist whose impact on American culture remains well defined. She creates, conducts and performs her music is a clear justification that Shakira is an artist. According to an opinion posted on Music World by Bruce Britt on March 26th 2002, Shakira’s artistic work steamed from multicultural influences after years of listening to Anglo and American rock acts like the Beatles, Nirvana and the cure. She is an artist who understands the value of other cultures. She thus employs Spanish-language in her recording to express her urge to embrace all persons regardless of race/language. According to Cepeda (1-2), Shakira's songs proved influential to American culture as they shaped groups' notions of what it means to be a Latino and a Columbian at the same time. Through her songs, Shakira defines her transnational citizenship, making people see the sense of embracing each other regardless of their differences in race, gender and skin tone (Cepeda, 1-2). As a global figure, Shakira impacted many Latinos in terms of their artistic works. According to Cepeda (4), since the 90s, many Latino acts have benefited from Shakira's popularization. For instance, due to the globalization of Shakira's music and brand, she broke her record and language barriers which allowed many young artists like J Balvin and Bad Bunny to enjoy their music being played on American radios. Shakira's work served as a great pathway to fighting against racial discrimination in the music industry, especially in America, where race defines one's position in most areas of life. The privilege of having recognition as a Latino artist in America is no joke, as white supremacy dominates in most prominent areas like the music industry within the American nation. One can argue that Shakira's globalized music is influential to this effect. It ignores the inabilities associated with minorities and people of color and highlights their potential and the need for recognition in all odds of life. Shakira is a global figure, having globalized her music, thus remaining renowned worldwide. As an American, Shakira's work has a great influence on an individual basis, especially with the influence the work has in communicating the relevance of transcending the language barrier. The artist is a Caribbean and Latino, but sharing such a mixture does not limit her from exercising other languages like Spanish and English. What does such a combination of language imply in cultural dimensions? It means all humans shave red blood and can embrace each other as life defines equality among all humans regardless of race, color, or gender. Her songs show Americans that language is acquired through learning; thus, no one should hate or critique the other because they are using different languages. Anything is possible through practise; thus, the need to learn different languages and embrace each other regardless of culture/race. Shakira's songs popularize Latin music globally, which impacts American culture in a great manner. From a personal perspective, American understands that race does not limit a person’s ability to perform or become the best in any area of life. Through Shakira's song, one understands that even minorities have the...
