Discussion What Makes Democracy Work in America? Political parties, interest groups, and social movements play a critical role in American democracy. Political parties are people who share ideas on how the government should be run. In America, when political parties are mentioned, the democrats and Republicans stand to define American politics. Members of political parties work together to win elections and influence public policy. Political parties scrutinize and oppose the government, ensuring they keep their promises and convey the people’s grievances. They link the public to their government ensuring they are heard, and the government does to brutalize them. Political parties play a role in political consolidation. They help protect fundamental democratic rights such as freedom of expression and association. They play a role in accountability. Social movements comprise charismatic leaders who believe in one voice. Joining a social movement requires little effort. It requires only participation. Through conversation and participation, social activities create awareness of the rot in government and society. The social movements facilitate a debate between politicians and the general public. The like-minded participants inspire and motivate and can alter political discussion in a country. Some of the movements are 'Black Lives Matter". This movement has created a debate worldwide, a significant step in promoting American democracy. However, social movements are loosely organized in structure and do not have an ideal protocol. Interest groups mobilize citizens and pressure governments that do not represent citizens. Americans can engage in politics through interest groups even after an election is done. Interest groups pressure elected officials to enact ideal legislation for their people. Interest groups are formed around businesses, trade associations, health, peace, and corporations.
