Abstract
Growth of the United States From the Reconstruction era to the end of the 19th century the United State underwent a rapid economic transformation that was marked by the rapid expansion of businesses, large scale agriculture and industrialization. Also an outburst of technological innovation in the country in 19th century fueled the rapid growth of the economy(Masika, 2005). Mechanization in agriculture improved farming in the country making the United States the world best food producer. Another factor that led to the rapid growth and development of the country was the increase in immigration and urbanization after the civil war. Immigrants were arriving in the country from different countries like Eastern Europe, Mexico and Asia who provided cheap labor in the country. Expansion of Public transport became the solution to rapid growth of America since the early19th century. Steam Ferry services began being offered in the country in 1810 and a decade later, during the late 1820’s, Horse-drawn omnibuses were introduced to the streets to beat the exponentially growing need for public transport (Cheape, 1980). With increased technological know-how, better means of transport emerged to cater for the growing demand. Mass transit therefore shaped the urban transportation system with public transit systems being composed of publicly funded buses which include commuter and bus rapid transit, urban rail which is made up of subways, and light rail, commuter rail for relatively long distances, ferries, cable cars, diesel and petrol propelled cars etc. (Cheape, 1980). Another factor that led to the rapid growth of the United States is the Progressives. The professional social work emerged in the United States between 1890 and 1920 during the so-called “Progressive Era” era. Between 1870 and 1920, the United States experienced profound economic, social, political and cultural upheavals, the thematic analysis of which has been at the heart of much of the historiography of the past thirty years (McGerr,2005).
