Exploring the Timeless Truths of Mythology: Insights from Campbell

Abstract

Reflection on Mythology Myths are sacred tales explaining the world and relating it to the human experience. Campbell combines his childhood experiences and stories that cut across all cultures and blend them to obtain what modern society is going through. Joseph Campbell defines myths as the clues of spiritual potentialities of human life. The interesting conversation between Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers on myths creates an understanding of human experience. When it comes to the culture, there are different variations and understanding of myths, but all converge to achieve self-fulfillment, deep intuition, and human satisfaction. Campbell acknowledges the universality of myths. This is true since no matter which culture a person comes from. Myths are passed down from generation to generation to symbolize traditions; thus, we obtain the eternal truths about human beings. Myths are educative on culture and heritage. Myths are deeply rooted in society and entangle all aspects of life. Campbell describes religion as a myth that cannot be eradicated from society. There exist several beliefs globally that cannot be eliminated from society. Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and many others, are examples of religions that exist globally and binds human life to modern-day practices and beliefs (Frase 2018). They also talk about marriage as an institution that has lost meaning. It is a spiritual ordeal that embodies mutuality that entails sacrifice and that reflects the image of God. Today marriage has lost its purpose, and it is no longer sacred and conservative like the earlier days. Divorce and abuse of marriage are eminent and do not reflect true mythology. Joseph Campbell describes God as a metaphor of mystery. He assumes different masks in different cultures. God draws attention to reflect the sacred space and arts that are embraced universally on human truths. Humans convey divine truths through rituals. Campbell states Eternity as a basic mythical idea that does not deal with time, ‘it is a dimension of here and now which thinking and time cuts out.
