The Importance of Byzantium Do you think Byzantium made a more significant contribution to Western civilization than Florence? Why or why not? The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, had its capital in Constantinople. It had a significant legacy on the Orthodox church and Greek and Roman studies revival. The empire was a powerful entity with superior economic, cultural, and military forces. According to (Ermatinger) although the Western Empire collapsed after succumbing to German invaders, it made significant contributions to the dissolution of slavery, a continuation of the Roman law and the imperial system, and the preservation of the Greek language. The empire's official religion was Christianity, although it was not wholly successful in the union between churches. The most important aspect of the Byzantine empire was its ability to create a relationship between the church and the state. The state entered Christian topography, and Constantine erected several sacred buildings. The empire gave rise to the orthodox Christian church. The Byzantine was a church empire with the Greeks, Latinos, and Catholics having distinct linguistic differences. The empire fueled the urbanization and development of the city of Constantinople. It underwent a series of transformations, for instance, expansion. The fourth and the sixth centuries saw the flourishing of the east. There was a boom in population, the city prospered, and Constantinople became the largest city in Europe. The city's prominence led to the erection of a wall to protect the city. The city also expanded its territory, stretching from Britain to North Africa and from Spain to Mesopotamia.
