Abstract
The Long Struggle for America’s Soul by Andrew Deblanco speaks about the deserving rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness of the each and every soul in America, which has been disregarded and unsolved. The pursuit of happiness, mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, gives will to all the people of America to live a free and contended life- as long as people are not doing anything unlawful or illegal. Andrew Deblanco talks about the culture in the 19th century, how people were treated and slaved, especially the African Americans- how they were not treated as human beings, rather like animals. This inhuman condition has been prolonged and left in an unsettled manner. Regarding this matter, South Carolina was took the first initiative, “Act to Prevent Runaways,” in order to prevent their slaves from running away. Years later Georgia came up with a night patrol, “Savannah Watch.” They wanted to create a new nation and the running away of slaves became a serious threat to it. Ruthless actions were taken against the fugitives, mentioned in the article, “In Boston, slave catchers seized a young man known as Shadrach who had escaped a few weeks earlier from slavery in Norfolk, Va., and found work in a Beacon Hill coffeehouse. While serving breakfast, he was seized with his waiter’s apron still on and taken to the nearby courthouse. As news of the arrest spread, a mostly black and angry crowd gathered in Court Square.” This illiberal activities has been going down for decades, and this arises the question, “Where is the end to all this uncivilized manners of a *civilized nation*?”
