Abstract

Describe the objectives and the functioning of the Spanish mission system. By the mid-1700s, how successful had it been in achieving its objectives in Texas? Missionaries are individuals who try to spread their religion to reach out to various communities. According to (Panich 69), the Spanish missions were religious communities in North America initiated by Spain from1500-1800S. The main objective of the Spain missionaries was to get Native Americans to adopt and practice Roman Catholicism and also embrace the Spanish culture. The nomadic tribes were rampant in America, and the Spanish mission saw it good to settle them, convert them to Christianity, and teach them agricultural and crafting techniques. They settled with the people adapting to their environment by storing grain and tilling the land. The Spanish wanted to establish control over the American territory. The center of the missions was dominion and power and control of the land of what is now Texas. The first Spanish settlements were established in 1680, today, present-day Mexico. The Spanish relationship with the Natives was cut short since the natives lost trust in the settlers. They brought diseases and disrupted the everyday lives of the natives. The 1700s was a prosperous century for Spanish Texas since they managed to control their territory from the Europeans and Independent Indians. San Antion became the most successful settlement with military and mission activities advancements. The Indians living in Santiano spoke in Spanish and were devoted Catholics. The mission flourished in the mid-1700s, and the Spanish spent time protecting wealthy provinces from their enemies. However, the Spanish mission systems could not bring Indians of Texas to grace New Spain permanently. The mission systems declined after the disruption from Apache and Comanche, which caused them to retreat behind. Work cited Panich, Lee M....
