Abstract
Colosseum: A Gladiator’s Story The video, Colosseum: A Gladiator's Story narrates the true story of Verus. Verus was a gladiator who fought at the Colosseum in Rome. The video gives the details of the life of a gladiator told through the life of Verus. During slavery in Rome, some slaves took the opportunity of being gladiators as an excellent opportunity to freedom while others took it as a death sentence. Because of this mentality, Verus attacked Priscus, a fellow slave, when he was not chosen by the owner of a gladiator school as a recruit. Under normal circumstances, slaves were not any one's concern in terms of health or even death. But from the film, it was clear that the gladiators were given some special treatment so that their entertainment roles could still be preserved. An injured gladiator was attended to by the best doctors, and it was apparent that the Roman doctors were renowned for their fresh woods treatment, and these were the doctors who treated the royal and the gladiators. Gladiators were treated differently from other slaves. For instance, a gladiator was paid the equivalent of a Roman soldier's pay for every win in the arena. For example, Priscus was awarded a small prayer statue and a wall shelf for his Celtic devotions, and as at the end of the video, both Verus and Priscus were awarded. In death, slaves were not accorded decent and proper burials. This was different for gladiators. Gladiators, regardless of being slaves, were accorded appropriate burials. The gladiators formed the funeral clubs upon which they ensured that they would be accorded proper burial upon their deaths. In the gladiators' funeral, their burial stones, inscriptions of their names, their origins, the fights they had and the dates of their deaths...
