Abstract
How did the civil war become a war to end slavery? Slavery served as the backbone of American economy. However it played a significant role in fostering the Civil War which became war to end slavery that revolved around inequalities based on race. Before the American Revolution, nearly every human acknowledged slavery as a natural part of life (Jeffrey Bain-Conkin et al., 1). The English colonies did not know how life could be without slaves as relied on them on for labour in their demanding farms and port works. Slavery offered cheap labour which generated significant wealth for the British crown. However some English political theorists started to rethink natural-law justifications for slavery rejecting long perceived assumptions defining slavery as a condition that naturally suited some people leading to transatlantic antislavery movement that argued for freedom as a natural condition for all humankind. The American Revolution war that comprised of the whites and enslaved people of colour aimed at attaining American Independence from its colonizer which became a reality in the late 18th century with a common motto for all “All men are created equal” (Berlin, 108). However even with the declaration of independence which the people of colour thought form equality for all humankind perspective, the whites ceased in treating them as equal humans and instead continued to manipulate them in their demanding farms and industries (Sandy, 358). The Northerners and the southerners differed in their opinions on slave ownership stirring hot debates about the legality of slave ownership and succession. Unlike the Northerners that were a little lenient on the enslaved American as gave them waged services in their industries, the Southerners believed in owning these slaves and misusing them in their demanding cotton farms and their homesteads without offering any pay.
