The Enduring Legacy of the Alamo: Texan Independence and the Mexican-American War

[Author] Battle remains a symbol of endurance because of the oppression during the struggle, making them win the following year. Before the war in December 1835, Texan volunteer soldiers led by Benjamin Milam and George Collinsworth occupied the Alamo [which was formerly a mission found close to San Antonia (Otfinoski, 2019a). The soldiers captured the fort during their mission to control it. Colonel James Bowie and Lieutenant Colonel William B. Travis took over the command of San Antonio's Texan forces in the middle of February of the year 1836. As a result of insufficient troop numbers, Sam Houston, who served as the Texan commander-in-chief, supported San Antonio being abandoned. The defenders, however, led by Travis and Bowie, started to defend the fort. When a Mexican force began to siege the regiment on February 23, the Texans resisted for 13 days, gaining victory over the Mexican troops (Buenger, 2021). A few Texans were spared when Santa Antonio authorized his men not to take any prisoner. They were later sent to the camp of Houston and warned of a similar fate awaiting the Texans with their continual participation in the revolt. A mega loss in the numbers of the Mexican forces occurred during the battle of the Alamo, resulting in a decrease in the number of soldiers. The Legacy of the Alamo battle made the Texans receive a victorious resistance symbol and a rallying cry during their war. With the defeat of Santa Anna's Mexican force, comprised of 1500 soldiers, their victory resulted in the Texans' independence.
