Course name Instructor’s name Assignment due date Discussion: Sisyphus and the Meaning of Life Camus is trying to say that life is a meaningless and unending struggle that humans must embrace and acknowledge to find happiness. He describes Sisyphus as rebellious and destined to find his own freedom from death as a means to achieve happiness. Camus says that Sisyphus is a hero since he does not despair when he realizes that the task of pushing a rock up the mountain is an endless punishment but is happy that it is his choice to endure the difficult task. Rather than experiencing despair when faced with the same challenges in this absurd life, humans should seek joy in their struggles and pointless tasks. Camus can say that “we must imagine Sisyphus as happy” because happiness is not a final goal he seeks to accomplish but the struggle in the task. The absurd nature of life makes it meaningless and yet it presents humans with the opportunity to revolt and seek joy during challenges. Sisyphus is happy since his goal is to embrace the futile task rather than achieve a specific objective in completion of his punishment. He has acknowledged the situation he faces and is conscious of the futile nature of the punishment. Since Sisyphus does not seek to create any meaning in life, he embraces each opportunity to live and achieves the ultimate victory. The myth of Sisyphus ties to discussions on personhood and identity by relating the struggles of Sisyphus to people’s challenges and pursuits in life.
