Abstract

Economic and Religious Impacts of the Puritans and the Quakers on Virginia colonists and Virginia colony Based on April Lee Hatfield's book, it is clear that Puritans and Quakers constituted a significant proportion of the Virginias population in several counties during the middle decade of the seventeenth century (Pg, 43). It is imperative to note that these two groups were migrants in Virginia who came with new ways of doing things, especially in religion and economic developments. Puritans and Quakers comprised Adantic communities from England, the Netherlands, and multiple colonies expressing the diverse constitution that allowed them to be successful relate and trading for a common goal. Quakers and Puritans concentrated most in the South of the James River and Eastern shore areas that were most involved in inter-colonial trade (Pg 39). Paying close attention to the religion and economic development of the Virginia colony and colonists, it is open that Eastern shore, Southside counties, and Northern neck Rappahannock were deeply enmeshed in inter-colonial trade attributed to the contributions of its populace. The combination of the non-conformist and inter-colonial populace in the areas above mentioned enhanced religious ties, which led to the development of trade connections leading to economic developments (Pg 43). It is imperative to note that most Puritans and Quakers' transatlantic, inter-colonial, and migration routes shaped Virginia's economy greatly as their settlement patterns influenced the colony's religious map (Pg 39). Since these groups viewed religion as a pathway to connection and undisputed relationships as intended by their creator, any religious chance enhanced inter-colonial trade enhancing economic development. However, when the Virginia company opened an Anglican parish system in Virginia, Puritans and Quakers experienced a great blow to their religious faith. This religious system divided the colony geographically, impacting these groups negatively. However, Puritans and Quakers maintained their non-conformist spirit that highly depended on inter-colonial networks of family and trade while respecting their spiritual beliefs regardless of the Virginias Anglican colony perception that Virginias officials deemed the primary religious controller.
