Abstract

Discussion Four: Institution of a Draft The government can institute a draft requiring citizens to enlist into a service mostly in the military. I am in opposition of a draft since it imposes servitude among the members of the community asked to enlist into the service. Additionally, such practices are discriminatory with certain groups being more likely to fall into the enlisting category. In the case of the military, a draft targets the young men who are asked to join the service without being consulted for voluntary enlistment (Asal, Justin, and Toronto 1471). It is discriminative to force some citizens to join a service for the government and these policies fail to consider their views. A draft does not benefit the country since it recruits individuals who may otherwise be unwilling to join the services they are requested to be part. With such practices in the military, a country is likely to have a force that lacks motivation and devotion to fight for their country. If a draft was created in the United States today, it would follow a significant change in geopolitics such as the growth of a foreign threat to the country. Additionally, the government would consider the kind of skills required in the country and would selectively choose participants (Hjalmarsson and Lindquist 2530). Individuals with technology skills may be asked to enlist if the threat is related to such an attack by a foreign entity or power. Additionally, young able-bodied men are likely to be asked to join the force since they are can easily be trained into soldiers. The United States would require identifying the nature of the conflict, the required participants, and the force the country needs to generate to protect its citizens.
