Abstract

[Name] [University] ABS 406 12/13/2025 Philosophy of Leadership “ A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” - John C. Maxwell Throughout the book, Boyle exemplifies leadership that is deeply rooted in empathy, humility, and a profound belief in the transformative potential of love. His approach to leadership goes beyond mere authority; it's about being present, vulnerable, and fully invested in the well-being of others. In the stories he shares, Boyle’s qualities of leadership shine through his action’s words, and unwavering commitment to the people he serves. One example of Boyle’s leadership is seen in the story of Scrappy, a young man who struggled with gang affiliation and personal loss. Boyle doesn’t judge Scrappy but instead offers him a path toward redemption and growth by inviting him to work at Homeboy Industries. Boyle’s leadership in this moment reflects patience and understanding. He recognizes Scrappy’s humanity beneath his hardened exterior and provides him with an opportunity to find purpose. This ability to see potential in others, even when they can’t see it in themselves, is a defining quality of Boyle’s leadership. Another instance of Boyle’s leadership is demonstrated in his interactions with George, a gang member who, despite his tough demeanor, reveals vulnerability during a heartfelt conversation. Boyle listens to George without interruption, creating a safe space for him to express himself. This act of listening, not just hearing, but truly listening is a hallmark of Boyle’s leadership style. It shows his respect for others and his belief in the healing power of being heard. For Boyle, leadership isn’t about solving every problem but about walking alongside people as they navigate their struggles. Boyle also inspires leadership qualities in the people around him. For example, Fabian, a former gang member who works at Homboy Industries, emerges as a leader by mentoring younger recruits. Fabian uses his lived experience to guide others, embodying the idea that leadership isn’t confined to titles or roles, It’s about influence and lead in their own ways. This empowerment reflects Boyle’s humility; he doesn’t seek to be the sole source of change but instead fosters a community where everyone has the potential to lead. What stood out to me the most about Boyle’s leadership is his authenticity. He doesn’t position himself as superior or separate from the people he serves. Instead, he acknowledges his own flaws and meets others with humility. This is particularly evident in his story about Yolanda, who teases him about his wardrobe. Rather than becoming defensive, Boyle laughs with her, showing that he’s not above being corrected or made fun of. This humility breaks...
