If someone is trying to kill or seriously harm me or another innocent person, I believe I have the right to defend myself, even if that means using lethal force as a last resort. In that situation, the act of self-defense isn’t about valuing one life over another; it’s about stopping an unjust attack and preserving life that has not forfeited its moral worth. At the same time, I understand the argument against killing in self-defense, which says that all life should be respected and that taking any life is always wrong. However, I think this view, while admirable, doesn’t take into account the reality that not everyone values the lives of others in the same way. As Thiroux and Krasemann (2012, p. 164) explain, defending the innocent can sometimes mean making hard choices to prevent greater harm. For me, I believe that while killing should never be taken lightly, it can be morally justified when it is truly necessary to protect one’s own life or the lives of others. For me, it’s about giving people the right to decide when their life has reached its natural conclusion, instead of forcing them to endure unnecessary pain. However, I also believe that there should be strict legal and ethical guidelines for physician-assisted suicide to prevent abuse or coercion. The book mentions that 39 states prohibit mercy death, and this shows how sensitive and controversial the issue remains (Thiroux & Krasemann, 2012, p. 184). I understand the fear that such practices could be misused, but when done ethically, with patient consent, medical oversight, and psychological evaluation, I see it as a humane option. In the end, I feel physicians should have the right to help terminally ill patients die with dignity, as long as it aligns with the patient’s wishes and ethical medical practice.
