Improving Public Policy Awareness: Strategies for Civic Engagement

Abstract

According to the author of your textbook, the level of the public's knowledge about many policy issues is very low. Do you agree or disagree and why? According to the book, the general public's understanding of policy concerns is quite low. It's accurate because most people are only concerned when there's an economic downturn, unemployment, a pandemic, a catastrophe, or a presidential election. Climate change, constitutional amendments, and healthcare reform are given little consideration. The federal government should launch programs to increase people's understanding of policy concerns. First and foremost, prioritizing public engagement before implementing government programs should be a top priority. This will broaden civic education and instill in residents the belief that their voice matters. Second, the media should explain the impacts of key policies to citizens in such a way that everyone believes they will be affected in some way. Finally, school curricula should be tailored to foster patriotism and an interest in political issues.
