Abstract
Instructor’s Name Introduction Galileo Galilei was a prolific Italian astronomer, philosopher, and mathematician who made significant contributions to the science of motion and astronomy. He made revolutionary discoveries that have stood out in modern-day astronomy. This led to his acknowledgment as the ‘father of modern science’ due to his experimentation and observations to ascertain the laws of nature. Galileo’s famous discovery was the telescope observations of the moon, Jupiter, Venus, and the sun thus bringing scientific revolution. He changed how we look at the solar system. Galileo is famed because of the discovery of the four moons of Jupiter and through his work scientist has gone ahead to discover over 709 moons of Jupiter. This paper will be a discussion of the various discoveries of Galileo Galilee on the solar system ad the significance to modern-day astronomy. Galileo’s Discovery on the use of Telescopes. Galileo was not the initial inventor of the telescope, but he had about it and through this, he was destined to greatness in the field of astronomy. He was quick to invent his telescope which could magnify up to 20 times, with his desire to explore the skies. the early invention of the telescope which employed the use of spyglass, Galileo invented a new version of the telescope which he used in making discoveries in the sky. Galileo's telescope was able to see far more distance than any other telescope during his era. The telescope was the start of Galileo’s career in the realm of astronomy. The Startling Discovery on Jupiter. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system, according to (Kelley, 2022), Galileo made his discovery on Jupiter on January 7, 1610. Using his homemade telescope, Galileo discovered four moons orbiting the planet of Jupiter. He managed to see objects and after examination, he ascertained that they were a group of stars that were moving in a regular pattern. He continued his examination for a week and realized that they were not stars but moons that were in the orbit of Jupiter. Nature at the time believed that the objects revolving around Jupiter were moving in the wrong direction. The satellites of Jupiter are now named in his honor as the Galilean moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. The Discovery on Venus. Venus is the brightest celestial object in the sky and the closest to the earth. Galileo discovered Venus in 1610. His desire to explore Venus was to ascertain if Venus had phases just like the moon and articulately, he found out that Venus went through phases just like the moon and was either half, crescent, or full. His discovery on Venus continued to downfall the famous belief at the time that planets and the sun revolved around the sun. He ascertained that the planet orbited around the sun concluding that the Earth was not the center of the universe. According to (Daugherty, 2019), Galileo’s discovery on Venus alluded that the earth is not the center of the universe and his lamentations angered the church leaders of the time. Galileo's discovery was a dangerous idea that cost him his freedom The Discovery of the Sun Galileo discovered that the sun had sunspots that appeared dark in color. According to (Carrasco et al., 2020), Galileo was not...
