Abstract
Initial Post: Customs Customs shape our lives. They act as a source of our identity, becoming an important aspect of society. Our everyday endeavors are accustomed to certain norms and traditions that we conform to without question, and we tend to pass it from generation to generation. Customs define what we do. Removing shoes before we enter the house is a common custom. We believe it’s a way of maintaining cleanliness and it is disrespectful to enter someone else’s house without removing shoes. Shaking hands is a universal cultural idea of greeting people. Another distinct custom is marriage. This aspect cuts across all communities. It is a sign of procreation and upholding values in society. I believe in love, family, and unity asserted by the doctrine of marriage. Diversity reigns in society with people of different languages, ethnicity, culture, and religion. This analogy pertains to different customs that define these groups of people. In some countries bowing to older people is a manifestation of respect. The elderly are seen as a source of knowledge and wisdom and they deserve to be respected. Customers foster harmony and unity within a particular group (Rosidah 2020). They are the pillar of life’s social system. Most definitely, society defines our worldview. Customs govern morality in society. For instance, customs are careful about dressing, sex outside marriage, stealing property, infidelity, and being gay. We all grow up with a particular set of rules and standards that we adhere to without question since we are accustomed to. I think everyone has different customs that govern their lives.
