Navigating the Roots of Chicana/o Studies: Defining a Distinct Academic Discipline

Abstract

Chapter Critical reflection The making of chicana/o studies: In the trenches of academe Introduction and chapter 1 The Making of Chicana/o Studies is a book whose introduction and chapter one best describes the development path for Chicana/o studies ever since its introduction. The introduction clearly defines Acuna as a potential figure whose contributions in defining the value of Chicana/o studies in learning institutions remain well defined. Based on the introduction, the path of defining the worth of these studies proved challenging as many intended to fold this discipline into Latino studies. However, Acuna came out straight and advocated for Chicana/o Studies, challenging those in academics who associated this discipline with Latino studies aiming to shadow it under the dubious umbrella of ethnic studies. Chapter one acknowledges the contributions of California State University, Northridge, in defining the value of Chicana/o studies paving the way for its success and development day after the other. However, this chapter also enlightens its readers on how the history of Chicana/o studies became ruined as many coined this discipline around one ethnic group, which neutralized its value as a discipline. Solutions to remedy the noted wrongs are well outlined to continue defining and strengthening the value of Chicana/o studies.
