Abstract

Attributions play a key influence in how we view and assess individuals and circumstances while trying to comprehend the social environment. The two primary categories of these attributions are internal attributions, which have to do with a person's personality or character, and external attributions, which have to do with things that have happened in a person's life. Although creating these attributions is an essential part of daily living, it's crucial to recognize that they might occasionally result in mistakes in our thinking. I recently came across a circumstance at work where attribution styles were relevant. Sarah was a coworker who frequently showed up late to team meetings. This circumstance made me think about the several attributions I could make: I could use an internal attribution approach and infer that Sarah was unprepared or didn't value timeliness, which would explain her tardiness. This internal attribution might influence my perception of her as an unreliable teammate and my assessment of her professionalism. As an alternative, I may choose an external attribution style and take into account outside elements that might be affecting Sarah's timeliness, such snarling traffic on her journey or personal problems. In this situation, I could think that she is dealing with difficulties that are out of her control, which would make me judge her with more compassion and understanding. It is difficult to determine if these attributions are accurate. There may be a mix of internal and external causes behind Sarah's tardiness. She may be unorganized (internal attribution), and resolving this problem might help her be more on time. However, it's also feasible that she arrived late due to other causes like unanticipated traffic delays or family emergencies.
