Abstract
Blood and Honor at the First Olympics Introduction The Olympic Games held in Olympia were nothing like the modern Olympics. Games were held in honor of Zeus, the god of thunder and lightning. Competitors were willing to give their lives to win (DocSpot n.p). Defeat was not an option, and most competitors preferred death rather than concede to defeat. Although travel was difficult at the time, people still came all over the world to witness the competitions. Specific details about the events and prizes One major characteristic of these games was that the games were held in the nude. Participants did not have special equipment but still had muscular and admirable physiques. There was no honor for losers, as losers barely walked out of the competition with their lives or their limbs intact. The Greeks competed for immortality. Winners who showed extraordinary bravery and strengths were honored by having songs written about them (DocSpot n.p). In addition, winners had statutes erected in their honor, making them symbols of victory for years to come, thus achieving immortality. The first of these Olympic Games were held in Olympia in the year 776 BC. The first competition was a footrace towards god Zeus’s altar, erected at the competition ground. Highly Fascinating and surprising facts The first Olympic competition did not allow women to participate. Others who could not participate were women, slaves, and non-Greeks. In addition, the games were held in August, under fool moon. According to the documentary, the participants were required to arrive at the venue one month early so that judges could assess and scrutinize them (DocSpot n.p).
