The American Revolution: Defending Against Tyranny or Rebelling Against God?

Abstract

The American Revolution and Theological Teachings Against Rebellion The American revolution was an act of rebellion because it violates the teaching of God and the commands of Romans 13 verses 1 to 7. Roman chapter 13 verse two specifically denotes that any person who rebels and opposes any authority is also rebelling against God’s authority (Laudani, 2013). According to the New Testament, leaders are anointed by God. Therefore, most people conclude that the United States was born out of violation and rebellion against the principles of the New Testament that our Founding Fathers disobeyed. However, I think that this violation was necessary to rest the tyranny. Leaders are appointed to serve the public and resist evildoers. Romans 3 verse 3 supports the derivation of power in leaders who enslave, inure, oppress and kill others (Moots and Hamilton, 2018). Unrighteous leaders who do not practice humanity are not for God’s sake, because He values righteousness and justness. From a theological perspective, the institution is civil government was ordained by God. Further, God also authorized self-defense, hence our Founding Fathers believed that they were obeying God and the scriptures by opposing tyranny and unjustness. Our Founding Fathers were aware that they were forbidden to overthrow and repel power, but not required to obey every law and policy (Moots and Hamilton, 2018). They understood that God did not approve of every government, but instead opposed anarchy and wickedness and only approved of a civil government in a country. In summary, the founding of the United States of America by our Founding Fathers was not a rebellion but an act of self-defense against tyrannical leaders who disobeyed the Scriptures and God.
