Abstract
Ethnographic Interview Assignment Ethnographic Interview Assignment Introduction In this ethnographic interview, I was able to expand my knowledge about other cultures other than mine. From my observation, I have had contacted other people from different cultures, but I never had the opportunity to go deeper into the other person's culture. The interviewee was Prince Madu, a male gender who was born and raised in Nigeria. Prince is 23 years old. He identified himself as Heterosexual. Moved to the United States three years ago from now. He believed that moving to the U.S has changed some aspects of his Nigerian culture, but his family has worked hard to keep those traditions alive, no matter where they are. The interview was conducted in a library near my house because we thought it was the perfect place to concentrate and stay focused. This paper will discuss how Prince's culture view nature's human existence, how his cultural traditions and values have affected him personally, if he is comfortable with the traditions or if he would like to change something from them, also, how his culture and a social worker who is not from his culture would interact. Interview Prince's family and himself identify themselves as Igbo culture located predominantly in the southeastern part of Nigeria. Princes describe that the Igbo culture is one of the prominent cultures of his country, Nigeria. They have three primary tribes/ cultures amongst 371, which are Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa. The culture identified in his country varies based on languages, ethics, lifestyles, orientation, food, and different life approaches. When thinking of normal life transitions, Prince'sPrince's culture can be different and similar to other cultures. When it comes to illness, Price stated that he comes from a place where they do not depend entirely on doctors but more on traditional medicine (herbal), except for critical cases like surgery and other complex illnesses. His culture is rich in knowledge of traditional methods of preventing and treating illnesses like flu, malaria, diabetes, HIV, infertility. The use of herbs (leaves and tree backs) attributes our good health and decisive response to covid and then Ebola. In the aspect of marriage, he stated that the couples expected to have straight sexualities and not homosexuality or bisexuality in his culture because they believe it is against the purpose of creation and multiplication ordered by GodGod at the genesis. His culture prides itself on having one of the most colorful and rich celebrations, which includes marriage. His culture (Igbo) celebrates different from most tribes in Nigeria. They have a traditional marriage which should come before any other marriage, whether church/ white or court marriages, because since they customs and traditions come first, any union must first celebrate traditional in a rich and, of course, colorful manner which must take place at the bride father's/closefather's/close male relative home or resident. During the traditional marriage, the bride price is paid to the Brideside's family, including jewelry, yams, and drinks (beer, palm wine). This act represents a way of showing appreciation to the bride's family for their acceptance in marriage. When celebrating a wedding, his culture has stages; the first stage is an introduction. The groom must introduce his family to the family of the incoming bride. The second stage would be traditional marriage/ wedding, the court or/ and white weddings follow. Other's aspect of life transitions is work, education, and death. In his culture, they believe in life after death. They believe that if you had a good life on earth, you may have reincarnation or remain in the spirit world awaiting rapture or judgment. If someone 69 and below dies, it is considered a painful exit; 70 years and above is celebrated with a huge funeral party because it is considered a glorious exit. His culture believes that the man is the sole home provider and should work more when it comes to working. On the other hand, the wife is expected to work only half of the time that the husband works or not, depending on her husband's choice. As a man of the Igbo culture, He expected to work harder, compete and come out on top among his peers. Based on education, they have two systems of learning. They have schools and an apprentice system. They believe that an uneducated man does not have a place in the world, but if the person does not want to go to school, they are encouraged to learn a trade through apprenticeship by basically working for a business person in his trade line for free for an agreed number of years. After completing the apprenticeship, the boss/employer will set up a business for the person to be on his own. There are about 371 tribes in Nigeria. Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa are the three major tribes. He believes that the other tribes are also unique with their set ethics and values. The Yoruba are located in the Southwestern part of the country. They speak the Yoruba language and are big on respect, discipline, and education. The Hausas, on the...
