Navigating Psychology and Child Advocacy: My Journey

Abstract

When growing up, a person experiences many different fields of psychology in their life. This may happen without the individual realizing it. The experiences may be in the form of simple interactions daily or emotional distress caused by traumatic experiences. Psychology plays a critical role in one’s life in such instances. Still, some people choose not to fully understand the mental processes involved and the events leading to the processes. I chose to double major in Psychology and Child Advocacy & Policy because of my passion to work with children and families. I have had a deep interest in psychology since I was a kid. I grew up in a dysfunctional family with immigrant parents, and I was the oldest daughter of four children. I had to take care of my siblings as my parents were never around, and that gave me the heart to love working with children and a better understanding of family dynamics. I was born in [City, State] and grew up in [City, State], an urban setting where raising kids is difficult compared to living in rural areas. My town we lived in was filled with immorality, including prostitution, substance abuse, and gang violence. Thankfully, none of my siblings experienced adversity and got involved with any of the above vices as they looked up to me as their role model. Because of my extensive experience working with children and working with different families as a family childcare worker, I have a passion for working with children and families.. As different scholars have indicated, early childhood developments may be affected by how a child is raised.
