Exploring the Vital Role of Psychology in Raising Children and Strengthening Families

Abstract

Psychology plays a critical role in one's life, and in some instances, these lessons are learned sub-consciously in that many do not realize. Therefore, it takes one to develop an interest around them to be able to understand what life offers, what one must work on, and what to let go of simply because when growing up, a person experiences many different fields of psychology in their life. The experiences may be in the form of simple interactions in one’s daily activities or emotional distress caused by traumatic experiences, observations from other people, situations, or events in people's lives. Therefore, for these reasons, I chose to major in Psychology and Child Advocacy & Policy because of my passion for understanding psychology more by working with children and families. My interest in psychology stirred up when I was a kid due to the abnormal conditions in which I grew up. I grew up in a dysfunctional family with immigrant parents, and I was the oldest of four children, and just like it happens, firstborns are usually the pacesetters of their siblings in all ways. I was born in [City, State], and grew up in [City, State], an urban setting where raising kids is difficult than living in rural areas. The town we lived in was filled with immorality, including prostitution, substance abuse, gang violence, and considering my parents were away most of the time. I had to be the parent in their absence. Such scenarios happen to many families, and they can affect a child either positively or negatively. A child babysitting siblings could form a positive attachment to children and family units or take it as a burden and negatively affect kids and family units. Luckily for me, the early interaction with my siblings spiked interest for kids and family units, a thing that I am still pursuing to date. In pursuing my dreams and ambitions, I would like to open a family childcare center where I would be delighted to practice family counseling as an LMFT. Working as a childcare worker from an early age has taught me that children need care and a conducive environment. Most parents are usually away, and they leave their children to childcare givers' responsibilities, and they may not understand the psychological aspects of their kids. Kids need attention, and it is only an interested party who can fathom what the kids need because kids, too, suffer from mental instabilities like stress and anxiety. Therefore, from what I learned from the experiences I have had in the past, ensuring every child and family that comes into my life, either professionally or personally, encounters the best environment to help with their development.
