Abstract
[Name] Student’s Name [Name] When I was younger, I loved going to the library. I would spend hours browsing through the shelves, looking at all of the different books. I loved reading, and I would read anything I could get my hands on. I would read books, magazines, newspapers, anything. I even read the labels on the food in the grocery store. I think that my love of reading comes from my parents. They both loved reading, and they always encouraged me to read. My dad would read to me every night before bed, and my mom would always have a book with her when she was waiting in line or on the bus. They showed me that reading was a fun and enjoyable activity, and I quickly developed a love for it. My parents always encouraged me to write, and they would always praise me for my writing. They would tell me how proud they were of me, and that always made me feel good. I think that my parents' encouragement helped me to develop a love for writing. I started learning to read on my own when I was in Kindergarten. I would use phonics flashcards to practice reading words. I would also read books that I was interested in, like chapter books about horses or dogs. I loved reading so much that I would read books for fun even when I wasn’t supposed to be reading! I would get in trouble for reading during class, but I didn’t care because I loved it so much. I continued to read and write throughout elementary and middle school. I participated in the Scholastic Book Club and read a lot of different books. I also wrote book reports and essays for school. I loved learning about different topics and expressing my thoughts in writing. In the era of the Internet, there are more ways for children to learn how to read than what I group up using. For instance, my younger sibling learnt how to read on an online platform called ABCMouse.com. ABCMouse.com is an online reading program that helps children learn to read from a young age. It is a subscription-based program that costs about $79.95 per year, but it is worth the price because it can help children learn to read faster and better. ABCMouse.com has a variety of activities that help children learn to read. There are interactive books, games, and puzzles that help children learn the alphabet, phonics, and reading skills. The program is designed for children ages 2 to 8, and it is research-based and proven to work. Other online avenues include YouTube and kids’ podcasts on Spotify. When most people think of literacy, the first thing that comes to mind is being able to read and write. However, literacy is so much more than that. It is the ability to think critically, to understand complex information, and to be able to use that information to solve problems. It is the ability to learn, to question, and to be open to new ideas. For me, literacy has been a life-changing experience....
