A., Van Dam, R. M., Samari, E., Chang, S., Seow, E., Chua, Y. C., ... & Subramaniam, M. (2022). Social Media–Driven Routes to Positive Mental Health Among Youth: Qualitative Enquiry and Concept Mapping Study. JMIR pediatrics and parenting, 5(1), e32758. doi:10.2196/32758 Online social networks have a positive and negative impact on youth’s mental health and social well-being. Excessive usage of social media has been associated to higher levels of depression, anxiety, distress, unhappiness, and life dissatisfaction. This can harm the mental health of young people. Vaingankar et al. (2022) also found that cyberbullying and trolling on social media put young people's mental health at risk. On the other hand, social media can help youths communicate and engage more effectively, which can improve their social well-being. Social media has been observed to influence communication and socialization, assisting to preserve friendships and facilitate social contact, Deepa et al. (2022). However, the overuse of social media platforms for communication and social networking can also impact the mental health of young individuals.
