The current research seeks to determine the relationship between social media usage and self-esteem levels among adolescents. Data collection would involve a random sample of students attending a selected secondary school that would demonstrate the relationship between the variables. The study is a descriptive research that would seek to determine the characteristics of a phenomenon about a population. Data analysis would be through the regression technique that would indicate the direction of the correlation, the amount of variance explained by the independent variable, and the significance of the slope. Interpretation of the results would provide insightful information to stakeholders on how social media usage affects self-esteem levels. To study the relationship between social media usage and self-esteem among adolescents, the team would use random sampling to select participants, administer surveys, use regression to analyze the data, and interpret the R-squared, slope, and the significance of the slope. Part I: Data Collection Determining the data collection process is an important part of the research that would determine how the results represent the phenomenon under investigation. For this study, using a sample as opposed to the whole population is appropriate since it would be unmanageable to collect data from all adolescents. By determining the relationship between social media use and the self-esteem levels of the target population, the study would provide insights on the need for intervention by stakeholders including parents and educators. Using a representative sample for the study would provide the team with sufficient data to facilitate conclusions on the characteristic of interest for the study. Since the target population typically includes teenagers at the high school level, this population would be the target for the sampling and data collection process. The team would use random sampling to select a representative sample from a selected secondary school to form the participants of the study. Random sampling reduces the effect of selection bias where the team members may select participants with certain characteristics leading to misleading findings. Limiting the geographic scope of the study to a single secondary school would ensure the feasibility and practicality of the study. Moreover, it is unlikely that the result of the study on the effect of social media usage and self-esteem levels would vary significantly among individuals in different geographical locations (Schemer et al., 2021). After selecting a representative sample, the team would use experience sampling to collect data from the selected participants on the explanatory and response variables. Since the study is designed to describe the characteristics of a population, there would be no need to have a control group among the selected sample. The team would not use a randomized control study since the methodology only requires one group of participants to form the sample. The data collection process would involve the selected participants completing surveys with questions on their social media usage and self-esteem levels. Part II: Methodology The type of the study is descriptive research whose purpose is to describe the characteristics of population and using the results to facilitate potential action. In this study, the team intends to investigate the relationship between social media usage and self-esteem levels among adolescents. Collecting the appropriate data for the explanatory and response variables would facilitate the use of appropriate statistical techniques to describe the phenomenon under investigation. The survey would contain questions on the frequency of social media usage to provide data for analysis and respond to the research question.
