Abstract

Culture and Communication [Name] [University] PSY-350-0 [Instructor Name] March 26 ,2023 Being an African American woman has taught me one thing about society today, all odds are against me. I wish to recant saying that I’ve never personally felt racism. While here in Illinois, we may not be passing laws that directly affect black people, however it doesn’t mean other states aren’t. To bring awareness to this situation, Mississippi’s Senate passed a House Bill that would expand police to areas of Jackson Capitol that had the highest percentage of black residents of any major U.S. City. It’s just a start to what many call Jim Crow 2.0. To take Florida for example, they have instituted restrictions on how schools and businesses can teach concepts that are race-related. This brings worry to how my child’s future will turn out. Black families are portrayed in the media as violent. A black man in the character of a man of infidelity or absent parenting. The mother is a strong independent black woman who’s always angry. The children who grow up in a ghetto and have a strong distrust of authority figures. These are roles that I see in multimedia that black people are. We look at shows such as Love and Hip-Hop, and Crime Stoppers. This portrayal of violence in society that is mainly at the hands of African American men, society starts to associate how dangerous the world is with my race group. The stereotyping of African Americans being hypersexualized, uneducated and violent. Young black men are often labeled as gangsters or players. That black people live on welfare and are lazy and criminals. How I spoke before that black women are seen as angry black women that appear loud, aggressive, and bossy. I’ll never forget playing video games online and being told to go eat fried chicken or watermelon. Friendships are normally based on people being alike. Friendships are formed on the basis of where you live, similar ways of growing up, social class, and sometimes family members. My personal relationships with friends are people who I grew up with. Being black, I have more in common with my same race group . My romantic partnerships are similar and I find it the same for my friends. Apart from my own racial group, I normally then closely associate myself with other people of color. Black lives matter is something that anyone who is black should be able to relate to. Being proactive in the cause of my own life, my family’s life, and my friends lives is what anyone should want to do. As a black woman, I feel as though I’m portrayed as aggressive, or judgmental. I try to refrain from making assumptions of people based on their race or religion. To me being black means I come from a culture that’s longer than America has been founded. Reference Pettus, E. W.
