Abstract

Who has the Responsibility of Taking Care of the Poor? When walking in the streets and getting a glimpse of the poor and vulnerable in society, the poor's question of responsibility crosses my mind. This context is a subject of debate with many controversies on who to take care of the poor. Biblically Christians are mandated to help the poor. However, this analogy of a Christian nation has always been forgotten. The rich are thriving more and ignoring their roles as givers. I believe the state has the responsibility to take care of the poor. The government is a law-and-order entity, and each citizen has an obligation to the laws. A waiver of the laws has consequences. The government imposes a tax on its citizens, and all citizens pay taxes, including the rich and poor. The system of taxation is progressive, and the rich are taxed more compared to the poor. The government is responsible for creating jobs, statutory regulations on wages, offering food reliefs, housing benefits, implementing social assistance programs, providing clean water and sanitation, supporting charity programs, and generally improving the living standards. According to (Dhiraj 3740), poverty can be and must be tackled through strategies such as economic growth, human development, and antipoverty programs. These strategies cannot be achieved entirely by any entity other than the government; alleviating poverty is the role of a state. The acts of charity are voluntary and cannot reach every citizen. Can a nation thrive on charity? Laws drive any country to prosperity. Citizens duly pay taxes, and government services them in return. The government cannot effectively care for the poor, but it is responsible for curbing poverty. The church is given the poor biblically, but people do not act according to the scriptures.
