The Evolving Global Sex Industry: Impacts, Drivers, and Implications

Abstract

Module 5 reflection Journal- The Sex Trade Sex industry is the term used to refer to people and organizations that are responsible in providing sexual products, services or even performance in exchange for money. Sex industry is not all about sexual intercourse but may entail other varieties which may include print, video, prostitutions, sex shops, sex shows, strip clubs and many more. Things have greatly changed, globally as far as health, employment, public policies and migration are concerned. It is due to these changes that sex industry has been greatly impacted. There are different major drivers that contribute to the change in the sex industry which incudes economic, demographic, technological and ideological (Benoit et al., 2021). Majority of these changes are brought about by globalisation which has an impact in increased economic interdependence. The interdependence is due to association between many countries through trade which in turn affects the movement of people as well as capital. On the other hand, many countries in the world have had massive economic transition resulting in an increase in unemployment and also far-reaching reorganization of employment. Many jobless people seek formal employment but cannot find it due to government structures on employment and investors. Therefore, the unemployed seek for alternatives of which one of them is in the sex industry. Many people think that sex workers are the ones referred to as prostitutes. In reality, all those employed in the sex industry are also referred to as sex workers. These may include prostitutes, exotic dancers, lap dancers brothel workers, erotic masseuses and the like. With this kind of industry, a lot of employment has been created (Jones, 2020). Furthermore, the sex industry also entails the managers, staff, and owners of premises, different enterprises that provide the necessary infrastructure and support and also other like photographers for the erotic magazines and other joint business organizations. With creation of employment, taxes are paid and the government generates revenue from the sex industry. Tourists visit other countries for various reasons among them being to visit sex workers.
