Abstract

SCI 225 Final Project: Become a Sustainable Development Consultant Objective: Throughout this course you have explored the multi-faceted topic of sustainability and learned about the three dimensions (pillars) of sustainability: social, economic, and environmental.  In this final project, you will be applying your knowledge of these concepts to a business or other appropriate scenario. Imagine that you are a corporate sustainability consultant who works with companies/organizations to make their businesses/practices more sustainable.  You have been tasked with creating a presentation that will persuade a potential client to make your suggested sustainable changes to their current practices. Summary: This final project involves you being a sustainable development consultant. You will have to create a presentation for your client that includes research on your chosen area, discussion of the pillars of sustainability science, and information on sustainable development along with your proposed recommendations. You will have to combine information from all modules, notes, and labs to apply in this project. It is your comprehensive summative assessment for the course. You can mold this project in many ways. This is a large part of your grade and must be professional, detailed, informative, and comprehensive! Here are some ideas of how to customize it to fit your majors and interests: Business: choose any business that you want to make more sustainable (such as restaurants, farms, food, manufacturing, transportation, energy, retail, or whatever you are interested in). This also works for any large organizations, such as hospitals, non for profits, schools, or charities. Education: create a sustainability program aimed at a specific level or for a school, or design a project that can be applied that is also impactful for an existing program, or look at educational organizations themselves and how they operate. Psychology: marketing is psychology and so you could create a marketing campaign for sustainability aimed at a particular group. You could also choose a social/community project that would really help address a need. Another idea is making the connection between happiness and nature (so, gathering psychology research that supports a community, school, or city going sustainable). Personal: Another good idea is to create a guide on how individuals can transition to become more sustainable in their own lives and households.
