Abstract

Course name Instructor’s name Assignment due date Preparedness Plan for Pollution Disasters: 2025 Ecuador Oil Spill Personal Inspiration The 2025 Ecuador oil spill is an important environmental pollution since it demonstrated how natural disasters can disrupt supply systems. Heavy rainfall that caused landslides in the province of Esmeraldas led to the rapture of the pipeline system and led to a humanitarian crisis. The topic is important to me personally since it was a major environmental crisis that polluted drinking water systems and has potential long-term health implications in the affected communities. Determining how planning can mitigate the effect of natural disasters on human-made systems is a unique aspect of pollution that would is interesting to investigate. Introduction to the Event In the province of Esmeraldas located on the norther coastal region of Eduardo, heavy rainfall and landslides caused the oil pipeline system to rapture. The initial oil spill occurred on March 13, 2025 followed by a second spill on March 22nd that worsened the state of pollution (IFRC, 2025). The oil spill contaminated sources of fresh water including rivers Esmeraldas, Caple, and Viche that provide water for domestic and agricultural uses. As a result of the oil spill, over 300,000 people were affected by the shortage of clean tap water and had to depend on the emergency water distribution. The oil spill amounted to 25,000 barrels that reached sources of drinking water, contaminated the soul, and potentially the Pacific Ocean. Thousands of people relied in the province of Esmeraldas relied on emergency relief services for food and water and there is potential for long-term environmental and health effects resulting from the oil spill. Additionally, the oil spill contamination destroyed crops including oil palm and caco that are a major source of livelihood in the affected communities. They lost over 13,000 hectares of crops and 100,000 animals as a result of water and soil pollution from the oil spill. The chemicals in the crude oil had immediate and long-term health effects as a result of the gases released into the atmosphere. The event caused an increase in the risk for accidental consumption of contaminated food and water for the communities in the region and the consumers of their products (IFRC, 2025). The 2025 Eduardo oil spill caused the contamination of resources in a populated region that relies on agriculture for its economy. Areas for Content Application Oil spills affecting fresh water sources have the potential to cause major environmental and health implications on communities affected. The crude oil that spilt on Ecuador contains a mixture of harmful hydrocarbons that mix with water and make it unsafe for consumption and irrigation. Dissolving hydrocarbons from crude oil causes the contamination of volatile chemicals and heavy metals that have harmful immediate and long-term effects. Light hydrocarbons such as propane and benzene cause air pollution in the region near the oil spill causing health effects on communities. Over time, heavy hydrocarbons get into water and soil sources or are broken down leading to the contamination of air and associated health hazards. The 2025 Eduardo oil spill led to the contamination of the environment by chemical compounds that make water, soil, and air unsafe for the communities (IFRC, 2025). In addition to human-related health effects, contamination of water sources affect the plan and animal life near oil spills. The population of the province of Esmeraldas faces long-term effects of chemical contaminations in the water and soil that affects crop growth and their animals. Crude oil contains dangerous chemicals that contaminate water, soil, and air in the areas surrounding the oil spill and lead to immediate and long-term health complications. Determining the chemical composition of compounds contaminating the environment after an oil spill can facilitate response to the resulting humanitarian crisis. During the Eduardo oil disaster in 2025, hydrocarbons were the primary pollutants by composition and have significant effects on the water, soil, and air quality in the region. Hydrogen with an atomic number of 1 combines with carbon with the atomic number 6 to form compounds that have significant health effects. Saturated hydrocarbons including alkanes and paraffins make up over 70% of the pollutant that resulted from the oil spill in Ecuador. Aromatic hydrocarbons of PAHs and polar hydrocarbons are found in lower amounts in crude oil but are still harmful to plant and animal life (Magalhães et al., 2022). Other elements...
