Abstract
Stereotype threat could be delimited as the singularity in which members of a particular stereotyped group tend to worry because they think that their performance would be arbitrated according to a negative group. Therefore, these particular stereotyped classes of people would likely feel inferior. A good example is the notion that girls are not good or competent in mathematics as boys. In this reference, therefore, girls would shy away from competing in a maths test with boys because they would likely feel that they would judge against the boys; hence may fear confirming the stereotype that, indeed, boys are better in maths than girls. A stereotype is not an uncommon thing in American society. Unfortunately, stereotype tends to have profound effects on those affected. Mostly, women have suffered the most as far as academic qualifications are concerned. The low concentrations in academics have made the women underrepresented in the topmost positions career-wise. This article will aim to talk about students' stereotypes and how they may be relevant to gender. Further, the essay intends to give the necessary and useful remedies that students could employ to improve the issues associated with stereotype effect in students. Stereotype threat could have both short and long-term effects on academics. Generally, stereotype threat could be experienced by women and minority groups in schools, further creating success barriers. The stereotype threat could result from insecurities caused by concern regarding confirmation of negative stereotypes in their respective clique. Stereotypes in an academic context can be detrimental to a student regarding a sense of belonging at the school. When this occurs, the students could have their motivation to study on the decline, affecting overall performance (Liu et al., 2021). In terms of gender, the stereotype threat could undermine the women and the minority groups in the schools hence affecting their interest in pursuing what could be thought to be hard subjects like, for instance, science and technology courses (Casad, Hale and Wachs,2017). In schools, some subjects are usually regarded as masculine, while others are regarded as feminine. For this reason, a good number of engineers are men, while hospitality-related careers are usually associated with women. Stereotype threat may lead to short time negative effects, including risky decision-making, which may be my lack of self-confidence and assurance. Stigma comes with the stereotype threat, and due to this, overreaction is usually not a rare thing. Similarly, aggression is also quite common in people with stereotype threat issues. In this context, therefore, the long-term effects of the stereotype threats are later reflected in life. Women cannot rise the ladder in terms of career because there is the notion that women should be confined in the kitchen. On the other hand, the notion that men should be the providers and breadwinners in the family has made their hustle and tussle by all means to have a stable family. Similarly, there is the notion that the whites are superior to the other minority groups, and hence, some positions are thought to be better taken by the whites. Such is translated from the schools in that, for instance, the blacks are perceived to be better in co-curricular and sporting activities. For such reasons, men would not march women's abilities in cases where they feel that their emotional sensitivity would be assessed (Casad, Hale, and Wachs,2017). Whites would underperform when they believe that blacks are better equipped with natural athletic abilities. People who suffer from the stereotype threat stand a higher chance of underperformance despite a person's intensified enthusiasm and morale to succeed (Kosakowska-Berezecka et al., 2017). The basic reason behind this is because the threat of confirming a negative stereotype would certainly induce uncertainty about an individual's performance. To this effect, physiological stress responses would be activated, including sympathetic nervous system arousal and increased blood pressure. Another factor that...
