Abstract
Date. Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development Infants, children, and teens undergo normal intellectual development from infancy to adulthood. Jael Piaget provides an excellent description of cognitive development in children, and we are going to use the four stages he describes to understand cognitive development purportedly. Cognitive development follows a sequence and cannot be skipped, and a complex understanding of the world marks each step. Children cannot think like adults since their brains work differently. We will now analyze the four developmental stages of a child; Sensorimotor stage; this stage begins from birth through the age of 18-24 months. Here, the infant focuses on the immediate environment, including what they see and their physical interactions. This stage is accompanied by crawling, standing, and walking. In this stage, memory and language development are milestones in cognitive development. The preoperational stage; is a stage of development of the toddler through the age of seven. Thinking becomes symbolic, and the child becomes mature. Memory and imagination enhance, and they can now understand the difference between the past and the future. Thinking based n intuition is not logical at this stage since they fail to understand the cause, effect, time, and comparison. Concrete Operational Stage; hails from 7 to 11 years, where logical thinking improves. The child realizes their uniqueness in thoughts and feelings and starts focusing on external events. Their thinking becomes abstract and hypothetical. Formal Operational Stage; this is a stage of intellectual development occurring above 11 years. They start to think systematically about abstract relationships, theories, and possibilities. This is the last stage of development, according to Piaget.
