Abstract

An Essential Guide to Public Speaking Chapter One When is public speaking a call to serve others? Is everyone called? God blesses humans with the defined ability to speak, thus a daily call to all, not just the great speakers, to love and serve others (our neighbors who include everybody in need) with the gift of communication. According to Schultze (2020), public speaking becomes a call to serve others when one has something influential to share with others, thus the need to respect God's call by fighting all odds and speaking publicly. Arguing public speaking from the servant speakers’ point of view, one can confirm that a faithful public speaker aims at publicly sharing this God-given gift to enlighten, motivate, and encourage others on pressing issues. Citing Rick and Barb's marriage engagement as a significant example, it is evident that their public speech about HIV/AIDS changed many people’s perceptions towards infected persons, excellently strengthening many marriages. For this reason, one can argue that God uses human weaknesses to demonstrate his glory, thus requiring people to learn how to speak the truth in love impacting them in one way or the other, thus serving them through such public talks. Since communication is a potential way to put our love of God and others in need into action, it helps build community. For this reason, when humans listen to God and others, they become personally aware of particular neighbors' needs and respond to such calls through servant/public speaking. When did you feel you should speak up but then decided not to? Many times when I feel like speaking out, but out of fear or little self-esteem, I find myself just quiet and thinking very hard of what it could have been like if I spoke out. However, one instance always revolves around my mind, and I feel it was worth sharing publicly. However, some people firmly believe that silence is also a powerful way of communicating as it limits chances of confrontation even in the most pressing issues. Arguing from the silent point of view, I recall my relationship with most relatives, including brothers and sisters. I note there is a certain level of discrimination towards one of my nephews from my blood sibling, which in most cases leads to confrontation or even a fight. Could it be because that nephew is alcoholic, short in education, and jobless, thus entitled to such discriminative approaches? It is a question I seek to get answers from my siblings, but I fear it might bring differences or more fighting within our family. I need to share my concerns with my peers, but I fear they might think we have many differences within our family. But how will I get answers to my questions and help bring peace, harmony, and understanding between my siblings and my nieces and nephews if I do not speak out? It is still a concern but going through this book; I feel ready to speak out for the betterment of all. I must speak out to right the wrongs. What difference would it make if we considered our audiences as our biblical neighbors? How might we plan speeches differently? Thinking of our target audiences as biblical neighbors can enhance focus on the speech to deliver fully to such audiences' needs. Employing a neighbor's perception in a speech...
