Abstract

Art as Communication Introduction Art is a universal and liberal form of communication. Through art, artists express their thoughts and feelings on various phenomena that are ambiguous, chaotic, impressive, educational, and memorable which often exceed extraordinary communication conveying feelings, ideas, and arguments. Some notable communication elements in art are symbols, colors, allegories, or mediums such as sculptures, paintings, and architecture. This project explores how art communicates various history, culture, civilization, and religious themes. Comparison 1: African Art versus American Art Exploration of Ancient vs. Modern Civilizations Through Art African art and American Art African art and American art represent two worlds, ancient civilization, and modern civilization. A hereditary form of leadership was common in African ancient civilizations in almost all communities. Royal power and kingship were celebrated, and the artwork represents Benin’s royal power African art is a symbolic art that portrays royal authority. The American art (architecture of the Maya below) contained inscriptions that contained accomplishments in biology, astronomy, and mathematics. Comparison 2: Islam vs. Indian Art Distinct Religious and Cultural Views Through Art Islam versus Indian Art Islam and Indian art have distinct views in religion and culture. However, their art differs in physical representation. Islamic art is a lot of religious buildings such as mosques and madrasahs. Indians make human sculptures and symbolic representation body artwork which does not feature in Islamic art since it is against the Quran. Islam and Indian art provide a distinctive realm in culture and religion which makes the two artworks compatible when making comparisons. Comparison 3: Chinese vs. Japanese Art Exploring Nature and Culture Through Artistic Techniques Chinese versus Japanese Art Chinese art shows the importance of lines in art and the sophisticated nature of Chinese art.
