Abstract

Yellow Journalism and War In the late 19th century, yellow journalism was one of the many factors that shaped the United States of America's decision to push into war in Cuba and the Philippines. The outcome of the war was the acquisition of the overseas territories by the United States of America. During that time, yellow journalism was a style of newspaper reporting that emphasized sensationalism over facts. Initially, Cuba had been a Spanish colony for a long time, and many in the united states called upon Spain to withdraw from Cuba (Dickerson, 2019). In some instances, the United States gave material support to the revolutionary groups in Cuba. At this time, Hearst and Pulitzer devoted more time and attention to the struggle for independence for Cuba by occasionally printing the happenings in Cuba by emphasizing the harshness of the Spanish rule while, on the other hand, highlighting the graciousness of the revolutionaries. The newspaper owners had mastered the game and understood that by the United States engaging in war with Cuba. They would be in a position not only to sell the newspapers, but also move into a position of national prominence (Campbell, 2019). All in all, journalism has since evolved since the Spanish-American war whereby there was the transition from the progressive era to the modern era. The progressive era was marked by a reconsideration of the gilded age's excesses, whereby the progressive era was known for its domestic reform. The modern era came about with television bringing about what newspapers could not bring about. The video could draw the audiences into new mediums.
