Racial Integration and Teamwork in Remember the Titans

Abstract

Personal Reflection and Interpretation: Remember the Titans Introduction “Remember the Titans” is a sports drama film that was directed by Boaz Yakin. It was released in year 200 based on a true story of the 1971 T.C. Williams High School football team in [City, State]. It is an interesting film that explores the themes of racial integration, leadership and teamwork. Set in the early 70s when racial tensions were high in the United States, T.C. Williams High School newly integrated gets in the hands of the local school board that decides to replace its successful white head coach Bill Yoast with Herman Boone an African American. Boone encounters challenges from the word go as the white players’ pledges to boycott the team if their former coach does not participate. In an attempt to ease racial tension and show some respect, Boone offers Yoast an assistant coach position and though initially refuses but then agrees to it in order to save the school teams reputation. Boone and Yoast work together and though racial tension still becomes defined in one way or the other, they try their best to take the school team to greater heights with Yoast loosing candidacy for the Hall o Fame after refusing to support the biased officiating against Titans. The film frustrated and inspired me. Although racial discrimination is not news in America, the pain of seeing African American rejected and experiencing injustice simply because of their color is not fun. Boone a great coach whose expertise landed him the Coaching position is mishandled by the white players and other prominent whites within the school not because he is not a performer but because their perception towards the blacks is compromised. However, such hostile treatment did not hinder his mission and on the contrary, Boone did his best to ensure that his team achieves both the racial harmony and triumph. Boone ensured that the team worked together ignoring their racial identity by helping them learn all about each player not from their own race but rather spending so much time with them.
