Abstract
IZOF and Arousal Regulation According to Robazza (2006), individual zones of optimal functioning (IZOF) prove an essential sport-specific framework model that enhances understanding of the relationship between emotional experience and individual success in sports. Basically, IZOF focus on the individual arousal, experience and overall performance rather than considerations of group-based patterns (Robazza, 2006). In sports, it is imperative to note that coaches and trainers acknowledge emotion as an inherent part of the competitive experience and may affect the victim's performance either positively or negatively. For the most prolonged period, anxiety has maintained a defined arousal effect on an athlete's performance. To this effect, an intermediate arousal level enhances optimum performance. However, low or high arousal levels that exceed moderate-intensity decrease performance (Robazza, 2006). Though anxiety and stress prove significant effects that determine performances in sports, the IZOF model extends its attention in determining an individual's performance through consideration of related emotional concepts like affect, mood and feeling states. IZOF help understand an individual level of effects like mood, feeling, and affect about arousal, which may affect an individual's performance positively or negatively (Robazza, 2006). Arousal, being an energized state of readiness to perform therefore calls for a disciplined regulation to ensure the proper readiness for any performance. IZOF argues that different athletes vary in their arousal levels, thus the need to consider each performance upon exposure to any form of arousal. For this reason, the model confirms that each athlete possesses an individual optimal pre-performance zone of anxiety intensity through which the athlete's highest performance occurs. Impaired performance only happens when the athlete's anxiety levels are beyond the optimal range, thus the need for a maintained level of arousal to enhance the proper performance at any given sport. To this effect, IZOF helps strategize the best...
