Abstract
Upon reading Oedipus Rex, one comes with several questions that one needs to reflect on. The first thing that one needs to contemplate on is how does it feel reading the play? How does the play impact the audience based on personal impact? When one answers these questions, they are in a better position to design the costumes and aids in making the right decision about the best time period in terms of production of the play. The main story of the play should also be a guide to making this decision about play production. Oedipus Rex would be best placed in ancient times as well as in the modern time in production. The ancient times would aid in the retention of the original idea as much as possible. The preservation of the historical context would be preserved, bearing in mind the primary themes and symbols. At the same time, the actions have the greatest theatricality in terms of the audio and visual medium of live storytelling. In the production, Oedipus, Jocasta, and Creon's hierarchy have to be clear in the essence that each has to have power. The power in each has to be different, but all the same, it has to be felt differently. On the other hand, the chorus has to be flexible in that it has to function simultaneously as a group as individuals. The language would be in modern times to understand the themes and the cast of the play. Incorporating the ancient costumes and the contemporary language would aid in bringing out the shapes and colors.
