Social media negatively changes how people present themselves with more focus being on sharing intimate details about their lives. In my experience, people are more concerned about likes and positive comments than their daily experiences of important moments in life. Social media has made external validation more important in today’s society leading to increased narcissism. Social media has made us more narcissistic by making people share details about their lives, increased concern for likes, and the pursuit for external validation. Social media has negatively changed how people present themselves with platforms such as Instagram and Facebook accelerating narcissistic behavior. As opposed to enjoying important moments in life, social media users are keener to show their friends details about their lives and see their responses. The impact of social media on how people present themselves is negative since their concern is the likes they get from their posts with little regard for the meaning of life. The society today has experienced an overall increase in narcissism and social media platforms are a catalyst for negative presentations of self to other users. Looking at the definition of narcissism and how other people and I use social media, I recognize the negative effect the platforms have on the society. I have found myself obsessing on how my friends on social media platforms respond to my posts and always anticipate for positive interactions.
