Abstract
Integrating Technology in Classrooms Introduction Advancement in technology comes with significant transformations in life, with the classroom looking much different as it did a decade or two ago. The interactive whiteboards have replaced the traditional chalkboards/blackboards that many learners used before technology application in the classroom. What do such changes imply? The changes mean that the utilization of technology has gradually become an integral part of the learning process in modern learning institutions. Technology offers immediate access to information and creates meaningful learning experiences for different learners. Paying close attention to the impacts of the current Covid-19 pandemic, one can argue that the application of technology in the classroom has expressed its essence as most online learners remained un-interacted even with the vast effects of the pandemic. Successful technology integration in the school comes along with understanding the best technology to employ amongst learners and the merits associated with such integrations, which offer a solid discussion base of this essay. Integrating Technology in Classroom One can define classroom technology integration as the utilization of technology to promote students learning experiences. However, to enhance success in such integrations, the integrator must have defined abilities in selecting technologies of relevance to the students based on the environment in which they operate. It is imperative to note that PowerPoint presentations, classroom tablets/games, internet homework assignments, and online grading systems serve as the most relevant but straightforward technologies that enhance the integration of technology in the classroom (Sezer et al. 10-12). PowerPoint is a simple technology that allows teachers to create slides with narrations, recordings, and transitions among features while presenting their text, which excellently enhances teacher-student engagement. The teacher can use a projector to ensure successful implementation of PowerPoint in live classroom learning and embed links that accompany ideas in the PowerPoint within the slides for access to online learners. A teacher can use PowerPoint to introduce new concepts in class while using visuals which enhance understanding amongst learners as they can see and relate the ideas communicated in real life. PowerPoint is an exciting technology as the slide presentations create the urge to open the next slide, thus limiting learners' boredom, which impacts their performance in the long run. Classroom tablets/games is another technology of relevance in the learning process. Classroom tablets are mobile devices offered to each learner for digital learning. It is a technology that allows the teachers to implement differentiation throughout their instructions. Applying this technology will enable students to feel independent and differentiate the shared instructions and respond to them at their own pace. Besides classroom tablets, teachers and students have increasingly embraced mobile integration in the learning process. The mobile learning approach integrates mobile devices with other information and communication technologies to offer learners a chance to create and improve their knowledge in any environment and time (O'Bannon et al., 125-126). It is a technology that supports academic activities through an interactive, dynamic and innovative knowledge-building process that excellently improves connectivity between learners and teachers. Such an approach can enhance a positive attitude towards learning and improve performances in the long run. Last but not least, internet homework assignments and online grading systems also serve as potential technologies that enhance digital learning in classrooms. Internet homework assignments and online grading systems are technologies that work hand in hand. Moodle and Brightspace serve as practical learning platforms through which teachers integrate internet homework assignment technology (Marcelo et al., 975). Internet homework allows the students to access their assignments more quickly, and since they access them independently, the approach enhances organization and engagement amongst students. On the other hand, the online grading system allows student-teacher and parents to have a communication flow. PowerSchool serves as a potential online grading system that helps the teachers post grades, manage transcript data, and analyze students' attendance patterns which while open facilitate lines of communication lines amongst the target audiences (students, parents and teachers). Benefits of Integrating Technology in Classroom Engagement and Connectivity: Technology enhances student engagement in their studies as learning becomes fun and interesting. On the other hand, technology allows teachers to connect fully with their students and their colleagues. Interactive software and programs that teachers use as learning technologies enable learners to respond to questions and lectures digitally, allowing them to feel independent thus fully engage in their studies. However, it is imperative to note that students’ engagement becomes enhanced through smooth integration of technology into their curriculum defined by 1:1 initiative (ensuring availability of one device (e.g. student tablets) for each student) (Hartman et al., 16-18). Collaboration and Inclusion: Integrating technology in the classroom allows students to collaborate and...
