Name: Part 1: Short Answer Questions Griffin has been cast as the lead character in the school play. He has a lot of lines to memorize and about three weeks before rehearsals begin. He plans to memorize about five pages per night, ensuring he has memorized Act I by the end of the first week. What method of memorization would be best for Griffin in this context? Why? The best method of memorization would be distributed practice. Distribution practice is a learning procedure that entails the practice periods of a particular task separated by rest periods or lengthy periods of particular contexts. Griffin is trying to memorize a school play. The memorialization contains rests where he memorizes five pages per night, making it a distribution practice. Mrs. Thomas is a new fourth-grade teacher. In the third week of school, she introduces a new science unit that includes several words that will probably be new to most of the students. The unit involves extensive declarative knowledge. Which type of memory processing would be best for her students here? The type of memory processing suitable is explicit memory, also known as declarative memory. This type of memory is suitable for fast processing and learning. It is suitable for the integration of new information. This memory involves conscious effort, and information must be memorized and declared. Declarative memory is divided into two; Episodic memory and semantic memory. Semantic memory involves the retention of general knowledge, while episodic memory is the retention of information on personal experiences. Mrs. Thomas can help her students integrate the new information and consciously declare that they have understood the concepts taught. Mrs. Carson wants her students to learn how to summarize as they read. She models the behaviors for the students and talks about each step she uses to summarize part of a story. For Mrs. Carson’s students to begin to learn by observing her modeling, what elements of observational learning do they need to exhibit? The students must exhibit the four elements of observation learning: attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Attention is necessary for anyone to learn anything. This element has distractions that can affect it, for instance, sleep, illness, and distractions. Retention helps an individual remember something and imitate it. The reproduction element will help the students copy the behavior they have observed. Motivation enhances all the other three elements of attention, retention, and reproduction. Without motivation, learning is put to a halt. Ian is a student in Mr. Dumas’s ninth-grade class. When Mr. Dumas announces that there will be a science test on Friday, Ian begins to dread Friday. He wonders whether he will be able to pass the science test. He didn’t do well on the previous test, and he struggled with the concepts in this chapter. What factors contribute to his anxiety about performing well on this exam. Some of the factors contributing to anxiety are fear and the lack of self-efficacy. Ian lacks self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is a belief in one’s abilities and intuition to propel one to success and attainments. Ian is a doomed student; the previous test haunts him, and he cannot get past it.
