It is the responsibility of this organization to provide information, generate public dialogue, and hold those in power accountable (Turner, 2018). The role of the media in a democratic society as a watchdog, ensuring that the public is informed about the actions of those in power as well as keeping the government under check, is critical to the operation of a democratic society. In this essay, I will argue that although the media is very important to the promotion of democracy, it is not without flaws, and there is opportunity for advancement in this area. The media is critical in fostering democracy since it is responsible for keeping people informed concerning political events, including their choices. This knowledge is critical because it enables voters to make educated choices about who to vote for and what policies they support (Lindner & Aichholzer, 2020) The media also fosters public dialogue, which is critical in a democracy because it enables people to debate major topics that affect them. Through these talks, citizens may obtain a better grasp of the topics and form their own perspectives. In addition to this, the media plays the role of a watchdog that ensures people in authority are held accountable. This function is very important because it prevents people in positions of leadership from misusing their power or making choices that are damaging to the general populace (Jungherr et al.2020). The media has the ability to reveal corrupt practices and bring to light concerns that could otherwise go unreported thanks to their investigative reporting as well as fact-checking efforts. Despite its importance in democratic development, the media has its share of defects. In recent years, there has been a marked decrease in people's faith in the media, which has led to worries over the capacity of the media to successfully promote democracy (Helberger, 2019). Several people have accused the media of being biased and of failing to deliver balanced news, both of which are valid criticisms. Some have accused the media of devoting an inordinate amount of attention to sensationalism and entertainment rather than paying sufficient attention to significant political concerns.
