Math Relay: Blending Physical Activity and Multiplication

Abstract

Math Relay Activity Discussion Personal opinion of the activity the teacher used in the math relay video The video is a great illustration of the application of an approach that can make a challenging subject like mathematics becomes fun to pupils. As illustrated in the video, the young kids seems exited and eager to engage in the math relay which in the end makes the multiplication exercise fun equipping the kids with skills that might be hard to forget about in the future (0:15-01:20). Basically integrating an academic subjects like math into physical education directly enhances learner’s engagements while reinforcing their learning through movement. While combining mathematics exercise with physical activity, the learners are able to solve the multiplication sums while merging cognitive tasks with physical exertion. Based on the energy the learners have expressed in the video, it is open that this math relay makes the math practice more dynamic as the young ones are able to see the practical application of this challenging subject concepts thus enhancing their understanding and retention. I strongly believe that the video is a great expression of how teachers can creatively blend academic subjects to ensure promotion of holistic learning experiences that equips learners with a positive perception towards the subject under consideration. How could the activity be improved? As much as the math relay exercise made the young learners express their joy while engaging in math activity, if there were a variety of movements, then their engagements would be more defined. What does this mean? The game would be improved with an increase in variety of movement like skipping, side shuffling or even some hopping. The instructor used running as the main form of movement for the kids to exercise the multiples of seven. As much as the learners enjoyed running and tapping each other for the acquisition of the numbers, if there were skipping or hopping, the laughter, fun and the urge to become the winner would have been higher. Forgetting such an experience with such advanced physical engagements would have been impossible making multiplication simple and fun. There is also the need to use a checking system to enable the participants understand whether they are right or wrong even before the relay is over.
