Abstract

Interpersonal Communication in a Relationship Introduction Interpersonal communication is very important in life more importantly in close relationship context. When two or more people communicate, they exchange information, feelings and meanings of many things making life worthwhile. To this effect, one can conclude that interpersonal communication is very important as it helps in building and maintaining relationships, expressing emotions as well as sharing thoughts, ideas and resolving conflicts. The key elements of interpersonal communication include verbal communication, non-verbal communication, listening, feedback, empathy, and conflict resolution making this type of communication a strong pillar of healthy relationships and social interactions. There are quite a few close relationships that interests me ranging from parent-to-child relationship, sibling relationship to romantic relationships which demands application of interpersonal communication for efficiency. In this essay, I will explore the interpersonal communication dynamics within the context of a romantic relationship. Application of Interpersonal Communication in a Romantic Relationship A romantic relationship proves a close interpersonal bond between two individuals always characterized by mutual attractions, affection, intimacy, and commitment (Lantagne & Furman, 2017). It is a type of a relationship that defines a very sensitive stage in life as it brings together two grown-ups whose differences ranging from childhood background, likes, interest and understanding proves too loud to ignore. In such a context, the need for defined interpersonal communication potentials proves essential to enhance the physical, emotional, and sexual connections between the partners. It is through interpersonal communication that partners within romantic relationship gain potentials to establish connection, build trust, express affection, negotiate needs and boundaries, resolve conflicts as well as experience general growth and development of their relationship (Solomon & Theiss, 2022). To this effect, expressing strong communication skills enhances the quality of romantic relationship which in return helps in promoting mutual understanding and respect as well as contributing to long-term happiness and fulfillments for both partners. While analyzing romantic relationship from the social exchange theory context, it is open that interpersonal communication plays a crucial role in determining the end results in this type of relationship. Based on this theory, individuals engage in relationships based on the perceived costs and rewards associated with them (Mitchell, Cropanzano & Quisenberry, 2012). To this effect, effective interpersonal communication abilities play a significant role in maximizing the rewards while minimizing chances of experiencing the costs. What does this imply? Effective interpersonal communication will enable the partners maximize their love, support, and companionship as great rewards in their relationships. For instance, I can use interpersonal relationship to encourage my partner on the need to maintain high level of understanding since we both differ in much way, but such differences only demand our understanding to enhance respect. It is also through interpersonal communication that as partners we will communicate our needs, desires, and expectations for satisfaction realization throughout our relationships well as to limit any chances of unnecessary conflicts and misunderstanding. Social exchange theory is all about understanding each other which will automatically have a positive impact on my romantic relationship. Self-disclosure is another communication concept that proves important in romantic relationship. In an effective communication especially in the context of a close romantic relationship, there is always the need for self-disclosure which involves revealing of personal information, feelings, and thoughts to one another. Since romantic relationship involves engaging in an intimate self-disclosure to deepen emotional intimacy and enhance trust, the need for effective interpersonal communication proves vital (Tajmirriyahi & Ickes, 2020). Such interpersonal communication abilities help partners balance self-disclosure with the appropriate level of openness and vulnerability triggering creation of supportive and an understanding environment within such a relationship. While I might not be so perfect in self-disclosure, I believe that our relationship has not experienced the negative effects of limited self-revelations as we have been trying as much as we could to express our inner thoughts and feelings towards one another. I believe I am still learning. Effective interpersonal communication also plays a significant role in fostering conflict management styles in romantic relationships. While it is not certain that people within a romantic relationship must always experience a smooth life free from conflicts, expressing defined interpersonal skills can work wonder in resolving any conflicts therein. It is all about how the partners communicate while engaged in any form of conflict that determines the impact such conflicts will...
