SPE 507 MODULE 9 Fieldwork Project Part 1: The School The community What school and community did you choose and why? Please include the name of the school and community (Chicago neighborhood or city/town). I chose to observe the community and school that I have worked in for the past 4 years. Sherman School of Excellence is located on the south side of Chicago, in a neighborhood called β€œBack of the Yards. Sherman has become a very crucial part of my teaching career because it is the first school I have ever taught at as a teacher. I have a great rapport with students, parents, and colleagues. I am well represented amongst my colleagues and I set on various communities to help build the moral of Sherman parents and students. Regarding the community: What is the community culture like, and how does that impact the school culture? The culture of the community is shaped by longstanding inequities related to race and socioeconomic status, which deeply affect the daily lives of its residents. Many families face systemic barriers that make it difficult to access stable employment, healthcare, and quality educational opportunities. As a result, the community often emphasizes resilience and survival rather than long-term enrichment and growth. This reality directly impacts the school culture. Educators work tirelessly to meet students' academic and emotional needs, often with limited resources and support. Schools in the community are significantly underfunded compared to those in more affluent, predominantly white neighborhoods, which results in disparities in curriculum offerings, extracurricular activities, and access to specialized services. Despite these challenges, the school community remains a place of hope and dedication, where teachers strive to create equitable learning experiences and empower students to break the cycle of poverty.
