Abstract
Food Webs in Ecosystems https://c8.alamy.com/comp/2GEC9BG/diagram-showing-food-web-in-the-rainforest-illustration-2GEC9BG.jpg. The image above shows the typical feeding relationships for a rainforest ecosystem indicating the producers, consumers, and decomposers. Two of the connected species in the diagram are the agouti and the jaguar where the agouti is the primary consumer and the jaguar is the secondary consumer. The species are connected since the jaguar eats other animals including the agouti for nourishment (Alamy, 2025). On the other hand, the agouti is the primary consumer that relies on the vegetation in the rainforest for nourishment. The primary producer in the ecosystem is the organism that uses sunlight to produce the energy that supports other species. In this ecosystem, the primary producer is the rainforest vegetation that feeds the primary consumers. If an event removed at least 50% of the primary producer, there would be significant implications on other organisms. The primary consumers including the agouti and the tapir would have to compete for the remaining half of the food and this event would mean that the ecosystem has less resources to support them. As they decline, the secondary consumers such as the jaguar would have less food leading to their reduction in numbers. In the immediate aftermath, more herbivores and carnivores would die since they are the primary and secondary consumers, leading to more food for scavengers and decomposing organisms. In the long-term, all organisms would have less energy and the species throughout the food web would decline to match the change in the numbers of primary producers. The decomposers in the ecosystem would include a wide range of animals including earthworms, fungi, and termites. They are responsible for the process of recycling waste from dead species back into the ecosystem leading to stability in the system. Biomagnification is the process through which toxic chemicals have a...
